Chapter Thirteen

Murphy put Callie down, ripped back the quilt on Parker’s bed, and stared at the empty sheets. Hell. What in the hell was he doing?

This was not the way he wanted to make love to Callie.

He looked at her, standing before him. Waiting.

“I really want to rip your clothes off right now and have my way with you.”

Callie bit her lip, then giggled. “Geez, Murphy. I thought you were going to go all Tarzan on me and everything.”

“I still might.”

“But you won’t. Will you?”

“No.”

“Because it’s the honorable thing to do.”

“No, because it’s the right thing to do. Hell, Callie, it’s been a damn week. Too much going on. We don’t need to add sex on top of it.”

“Sex.”

He stared at her. “Yes. Sex.”

“As if sex is a problem?”

“You know what I mean.”

“What if it wasn’t just sex? What if it’s more than that? What if it’s making love?”

Slowly, he shook his head. “Hell, Callie, I don’t know what I’m doing.” He sat on the edge of the bed.

“I do.”

“What?”

“I know what you are doing.”

“And what is that?”

“You’re avoiding.”

He peered into her eyes. “Pot calling the kettle black?”

“Perhaps.”

She sat down beside him. “I have an idea.”

“What’s that?”

“Let’s just go to bed and sleep.”

“Together?”

“Yeah. And maybe talk.”

“That’s all?”

“Let’s not make a plan, Murphy. Let’s just see what happens.”

He studied her for a moment. “All right.”

After Murphy kicked off his boots, he stood and pulled hers off too. First one, then the other. Slowly. His hands lingered over her feet and, as if reluctantly, he let them go one by one. He leaned in and placed a fisted hand on the bed, one on each side of her hips, followed by one knee then the other, urging her backward.

Callie scooted back with his advance.

His dark gaze was intense. He didn’t say a word.

A sensual energy burst up inside of her as she fell back and he rolled over her, taking her with him. They moved into the center of the bed, fully clothed, and before Murphy flipped the quilt over them, he lowered the light from the lamp next to the bed.

Callie blinked, taking a few seconds to let her eyes adjust to the semi-darkness.

Murphy didn’t wait so long, however. He took advantage of that momentary blindness to pull her closer and find her lips.

The kiss was soft, gentle, loving, and sweet. Callie’s heart swelled and she wrapped her arms around him in an attempt to bring him closer.

They lay on their sides, face to face. Callie studied the lines on Murphy’s face, wanting to reach out and trace every one of them with her forefinger. Life, he sure had lived it. She had no clue what his life was like before he came into hers, and she didn’t know anything about what he’d been doing since she left. So much to learn about each other.

But they had what was in the middle, and they had now. She didn’t want to think about anything else. She knew she was likely using this
